The 2002 Kemp's Ridley Nesting Season

At Padre Island National Seashore.

Breaking All Records!

Padre Island National Seashore Volunteer Venice Scheurich spotted a nesting Kemp's Ridley sea turtle while on patrol on May 13, 2002. Venice has patrolled for four years and this was her first sighting of a nesting turtle.

Dr. Donna Shaver-Miller examines the clutch of eggs that was collected on May 13, 2002. This was the tenth turtle to nest on Padre Island this year. As of May 20, eighteen turtles have nested on the Texas coast including ten at Padre Island National Seashore. Included in this group are head-started turtles.

The female Kemp's Ridley sea turtle returns to the Gulf of Mexico after laying her eggs on Padre Island. The hatchlings will be released at the end of June and beginning of July. Call the Hatchling Hotline to get the latest updates on release times.
