Dunbar Middle School is located in Dickinson, Texas, a few miles south of Houston and just a short drive from the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks to an enthusiastic teaching team, the students know a lot about sea turtles. Science teacher Rita Williams leads the team introducing reading games and other classroom activities pepped up by the presence of sea turtle art and crafts.

The Turtle Race for Reading (view
picture) is visible on a blackboard in Rita's classroom. Pictures of her students adorn sea turtle cut-outs and are shown racing across the board according to the number of reading assignments they have completed.

Close enough to visit the Galveston (Texas) Laboratory of the National Marine Fisheries Service where sea turtles can be seen, the school participates in an annual Penny Drive. They decorate recycled plastic 2 liter soft drink bottles to resemble sea turtles for collecting the pennies, (view pictures

Science Teacher Chris Hawthorne provides photographs of the students showing how sea turtles help them learn! Chris also designed a clever sea turtle hatchling from a plastic Easter egg (view pictures
