NEW video: "Ancient Sea Turtles Stranded in the Modern World," by the Sea Turtle Restoration Project (STRP) explores the sea turtles' lives and the threats posed by humans including marine pollution, destruction of nesting sites, poaching, and the greatest threat of all - the capture of sea turtles in shrimp nets. Learn why sea turtles continue to be at risk in the Gulf of Mexico and other U.S. coastal areas. Call STRP to order: 415-488-0370.

NEW INFORMATION: Dr. Charles W. Caillouet, a career biologist recently retired from the National Marine Fisheries Service, has compiled a fascinating collection of letters and reports from sea turtle pioneers, biologists, conservationists and government agencies. This compilation begins in 1977 when the world learned that if action was not taken and immediately, the Kemp's ridley sea turtles would soon join the Passenger Pigeon, the Do-Do bird, the Dusky Sparrow and other plants and animals doomed to extinction by the ignorance and exploitation of man.

These letters and reports reveal the excitement of new programs and realization of occasional success as well as frustration and disappointment when funding was lost, political pressure applied, government support removed, legislative opportunities lost and the Endangered Species Act ignored. The reading of this collection should not be rushed and will be enjoyed by the serious student of sea turtles, conservation efforts, government involvement and public outcry. Disagreements among scientists is sprinkled throughout the collection while dedicated individuals, both in and out of government, continue the constant message calling for protection of the Kemp's ridleys and all sea turtles in U.S. waters.
